Picking your tools: How to choose the perfect gardening tools every time

Every gardener knows how important it is to have the right gardening tools on their side. Choosing the wrong tools can make tasks much longer and can even damage your garden.

But, with so many tools available on the market, it can be hard to choose which ones are the perfect fit for your needs without trying them first. Although you’d love to take them home and give them all a go, then keep the best ones, most gardening stores and sites also cannot process refunds or exchanges unless goods are damaged due to the risk of cross-contamination.

Where you’re unsure of what to look for, here are a few things you can check out to make sure your next tool purchase will perfectly meet your needs.

Look for ergonomic products

Though they may be slightly more expensive, products that are made for your comfort, including trowels with handles that wrap around your wrist and pruners that have a sturdy grip, will not only help you get the job done quickly but will protect your muscles and bones in the long-term. This is because they will place less strain on your body and allow you to continue working for hours on end.

Play to your strengths and traits when choosing tools

It’s important to focus on your personal traits when choosing a gardening tool to help you get the job done. If you are taller, looking for tools with longer handles will help keep back, hip and shoulder pain at bay, especially if they are tools you will be using for long periods of time, like a shovel

In the same way, it’s vital that you choose tools that are comfortable for you to carry. While big metallic, 5L watering cans are gorgeous, if you are gifting this to someone who is older or weaker in their natural build, they won’t be able to use the product to its full capacity due to its extreme weight. For them, an equally stunning plastic can will do the same job but won’t add excess additional weight.

Find products that fit

The term gardening tools extends much further past the handheld tools we use to make sure our yard is in tip-top shape. When purchasing boots, gloves, hats, face masks, aprons and other gardening clothing items, it’s vital that they are the best fit possible.

Too much excess material, especially when using gloves, will get in the way of your garden work and could extend the time it will take to get the job done. If you are in-store, always try products where possible, and when purchasing online, make sure they have accurate measurements in place so you can be certain the product you choose is the perfect fit!
